Deep Castello - off Venice As most tourists look for the 'real' Venice they often miss it because their stay is short, and also because they want to see the 'musts', forgetting that all of Venice is real and there is much more to see and grasp than only a few sites. In fact, certain areas are less touristic than others and mostly populated by local population, with no masks or souvenir shops around and where local life and flavor still rule. Castello is one of these.
Castello is the largest and most populated areas of the six districts, or sestieri, in which Venice has been divided since the 12th century. If we think of Venice as a fish, Castello will be the tail occupying the eastern most part of the city, but is a big tail and one for which we now offer the "Deep Castello" itinerary. This new itinerary brings you further to the real Venice: through a maze of alleys in areas barely touched by the 19th and 20th centuries urban restructurings, by the Franciscan church of San Francesco della Vigna, one of the greatest example of noble showcases in the city, by the Arsenal gate and along the huge ramparts that once secured the military shipyards. And even more: public housing, linen being dried outdoors hanging on ropes, small workshops and typical inns.
All in all, this is not only a 'must' tour but a truly enjoyable walk through Venice itself! Castello!
